ILOILO City – The city government allocated P5 million for the pension of 10,000 indigent senior citizens, which will be fully released by the end of this month.

Each recipient is entitled to P1,000 annually, said Elpidio Azuelo Jr. of the city government’s Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA).

On March 21, each of 1,400 target recipients in Molo district received P500, which is for the first semester of the year, while 3,155 others will receive theirs on March 31.

Wednesday’s pension distribution was held in La Paz district with 1,374 recipients.

Another batch of 1,761 indigent senior citizens from the district will receive theirs on March 29.

Yesterday, the pension was released to 726 beneficiaries in Lapuz district.

Today in Arevalo district, 700 beneficiaries will receive their pension, and 948 others on March 28.

In Mandurriao district, 1,000 recipients will receive their pension today.

Some 2,300 indigent senior citizens of Jaro district will get their pension on March 28 and 1,182 others on March 30.

The City Proper district has 2,500 qualified elderly who will receive their pension on March 29.

Except for the City Proper district where the distribution will be held at the Fort San Pedro National High School, other districts will release the pension in their respective district gymnasiums.

“They are really the city’s poorest of the poor senior citizens,” Azuelo said, adding that the amount helps them with their maintenance drugs.

Beneficiaries are evaluated by social workers upon recommendation from the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines. They are also subjected to a background check before they qualify.

The locally funded pension started five years ago under the term of Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Meanwhile, 5,716 senior citizens whose names are included in the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) will also receive their social pension from the national government starting March 28.

Azuelo said the distribution on March 28 will be for recipients from Arevalo and Mandurriao districts with 948 and 584 beneficiaries, respectively.

March 29 will be for La Paz and Lapuz districts with a total of 1,943 beneficiaries.

The distribution for 1,212 and 1,029 recipients from Molo and City Proper districts, respectively will be on March 30.

The venue for the release will be their respective district gyms.

Iloilo City has 34,082 senior citizens, based on OSCA records. (PNA)
