CAPIZ — Farmers in the municipality of Dao can now expect significantly lower electricity costs following the installation of a P7-million solar-powered irrigation system aimed at improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.

The project, implemented by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), is expected to provide a reliable water source to 30 hectares of farmland in the Matagnop–Agtambi–Malonoy Agrarian Reform Community.

Dubbed the Matagnop Solar-Powered Irrigation Project, the facility directly benefits 33 farmers, enabling them to enhance farming practices, improve crop yields, and diversify production amid changing weather conditions.

DAR officials said the system features deep well facilities capable of accessing groundwater, particularly during dry spells. Two high-capacity solar-powered pumps have been installed and strategically positioned to ensure efficient water distribution across the service area.

The pumps are housed in a pump house with a secured perimeter fence to protect the equipment from vandalism and theft.

The irrigation system also includes supporting hydrological structures such as bench flumes to direct water flow efficiently and stilling pools to reduce turbulence and ensure a steady supply. Drainage crossings were likewise constructed to manage excess runoff and prevent soil erosion.

Officials said the project underscores the government’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable agriculture. By utilizing solar power, the system reduces farmers’ dependence on electricity and fossil fuels while supporting national goals for environmental protection.

Local farmer-beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the project, noting that dependable water access and lower energy costs would allow them to better plan their planting cycles and focus on improving crop quality and production.

DAR said the Matagnop Solar-Powered Irrigation Project reflects ongoing efforts to promote agricultural innovation and strengthen the resilience of farming communities, serving as a model for similar initiatives in the region./PN
