MANILA — Malacañang dismissed Vice President Sara Duterte’s allegations that the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is orchestrating political moves to eventually extend the Chief Executive’s stay in power through Charter change, branding her remarks as baseless and “fake news.”
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro rejected Duterte-Carpio’s claims that the impeachment efforts against her, the reported enforcement of International Criminal Court warrants against her allies, and the escalating political tensions were all part of a broader campaign to cripple the opposition ahead of constitutional amendments.
“Mas nakakahiya sa ngayon ang magkomento pa sa mga walang basehan at walang sustansyang pahayag ni VP Sara Duterte,” Castro said in a statement.
Duterte-Carpio earlier alleged that the Marcos administration was allegedly using government resources for a political demolition campaign designed to weaken political opponents before pushing for amendments to the 1987 Constitution that could allow the President to retain political influence beyond his six-year term.
The Vice President also pointed to Marcos’ recent interview with Bloomberg, where Charter change was reportedly mentioned, saying it indicated that the President “will not step down.”
But Castro accused Duterte-Carpio of spreading intrigue and misinformation instead of focusing on public service.
“Ang kailangan natin ay isang public servant na nagseserbisyo sa bayan at taumbayan at hindi yung ang alam lang ay gumawa ng intriga at fake news,” she said.
Malacañang has repeatedly denied accusations that the administration is pursuing Charter change to extend Marcos’ term, insisting that no such plan exists./PN
