ILOILO City – “Safe and successful” was how the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Iloilo described the 45th edition of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival held at Villa Beach in Arevalo district on Sunday.
There were no untoward incidents, according to Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of PCG-Iloilo, except for three sailboats that capsized when their main sails broke.
“The coastguard towed and secured the sailboats and their crew to the shoreline,” said Palabrica.
Around 250 coastguards took charge of maritime safety and security of the oldest sailing event in Asia.
PCG-Iloilo mobilized floating assets – two patrol crafts, six aluminum boats, two rubber boats and seven rented motor bancas that acted as marker boats and sea marshals at the Iloilo Strait.
Palabrica said 48 paraws participated.
The race started around 10:30 a.m.
The race concluded around 1 p.m.
This year’s Paraw Regatta theme was “Showing the Philippines as a Seafaring Nation, Dali na kag Magkinasadya.”
Paraw Regatta was established more than four decades ago primarily to preserve the paraw as a significant link to the earliest period of Ilonggo history. Its conception also served as an addition to the booming tourism industry of the city./PN
