MANILA – Alvin Pasaol continued his hot shooting to lead University of the East Red Warriors to a 96-91 victory over University of Santo Tomas Tigers in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
After tallying 49 points in their 100-106 loss to De La Salle University Green Archers, Pasaol came up with only 32 points and 10 rebounds but this was enough to lift Red Warriors to its first victory in seven matches.
Their win kept the Growling Tigers winless (0-7).
In the tightly contested second quarter, Pasaol spearheaded Red Warriors’ huge run with inside and outside conversions for a 52-37 advantage near the halftime break.
Tigers started strong in the third frame to come to as close as 54-59 following a hit by center Steve Akomo but Pasaol came up with consecutive points to push the lead back to 8 points at 79-71.
UST came up with another run to force a deadlock 85-all but Pasaol, Mark Olayon and Philip Manalang countered with crucial hits in the endgame to preserve the victory.
Manalang finished with career-high 20 points, including three 3-point conversions, while Olayon and Jason Varilla had 15 markers apiece for Red Warriors.
Marvin Lee top-scored with 20 points while Akomo had double-double 19 points and 18 rebounds for Tigers./PN
