MANILA – Team Philippines may end up with a dismal finish when the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia formally closes tonight, with only several events left.
At press time, the Philippines was stuck in sixth place with 24 gold, 30 silver and 59 bronze medals behind Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Indonesia.
If the Filipinos cannot add more gold medals, their haul will be less than the 29 the Philippines won in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games – and much less than the predicted 50.
Dines Dumaan, a native of Roxas City, Capiz province, on Tuesday captured a gold medal in men’s tanding pencak silat 45-50kg event, beating Firman of Indonesia 4-1.
Rhezie Canama Aragon, meanwhile, failed to deliver a gold medal after losing to Marsha Halindak of Indonesia 9-4 in women’s taekwondo -53kg on Monday night.
With the scores tied 3-all at the opening, Halindak delivered body shots on Aragon in the second and third rounds to create a gap. The latter tried to cut the deficit but failed to break the Indonesian’s defense.
“Sa laban, palagay ko po naman ay patas lang kami. Kaya lang naunahan ako at malakas din yung depensa niya. Babawi na lang po ako sa susunod kong laban,” said Aragon, who was playing at the SEA Games for the first time.
Geylord Coveta also settled for silver after failing to sustain his strong start in men’s windsurfing RS One. Natthaphong Phonoppharat of Thailand took home the gold.
Ryan Jakiri bagged a bronze medal in 63.5kg muay thai. Cambodian opponent Khun Dima knocked him down in the second round.
Also taking home bronze medals were Francis Agojo in taekwondo, Robert Garcia in squash men’s singles, Jemyca Aribando in women’s squash, and Princesslyn Enopia in pencak silat tanding./PN
