MANILA – Arven Alcantara’s defeat to Rozaimi Bin Rozali of Malaysia in the gold medal match of the 29th Southeast Asian Games taekwondo did not sit well with the Philippines.
The scores were tied at 17-all on Monday when the head judge curiously disqualified Alcantara for allegedly accumulating 10 gamjeoms, or penalties.
But a review of the match showed that Alcantara only committed only nine, according to Philippine team manager Dindo Simpao.
“We were instructed by POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) to pursue the protest,” Simpao told Sports Radio 918 AM.
“We know there are no proper grounds for the protest to prosper. We just filed it to make a statement,” Simpao added. “To put it bluntly, the outcome of the match was not in the spirit of fair play.”
POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, who personally saw the match, also criticized the “punitive declaration” of the head judge.
“This (officiating) is not good for the sport. The Malaysian should not get away with it,” Cojuangco said in a statement. “I have already contacted the Malaysian Olympic Committee to look into this.”
The Philippine taekwondo delegation had pretty dismal performances in this edition of the biennial event. They bagged only two gold medals along with a silver medal and three bronze medals./PN
