BACOLOD City – The country is moving closer toward an authoritarian rule, according to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros (Bayan-Negros) secretary-general Michael Concepcion.
Concepcion said this in the wake of the House of Representatives’ hearing on constitutional amendments.
He said Bayan-Negros is now pinning its hope on the members of the Senate.
Concepcion believes that the shift to a federal form of government is only a “smoke screen” to President Rodrigo Duterte’s “motive of total dominion over the country.”
He added that amending the 1987 Constitution under the Duterte administration will not benefit the Filipinos, especially the marginalized sectors.
“The poor will become poorer and the landless farmers will remain landless. Their slim chance of owning their own farm lots will be zero under the proposed revision of the Constitution,” Concepcion said.
Concepcion believes that Duterte will open ownership of land properties in the country to foreigners, which will displace indigenous communities.
Yesterday, members of militant groups under Bayan-Negros staged an indignation rally in front of the old city hall.
Aside from the constitutional amendments, they also condemned the revocation of media outlet Rappler’s license to operate.
The revocation is a blatant suppression of freedom of expression, they said./PN
