PH keeps Asean School Games’ caging crown

MANILA – Nazareth School of National University Bullpups-Philippines successfully retained the boys basketball gold medal in the 2019 Asean School Games at the GOR Sahabat in Semarang, Indonesia.

The Goldwyn Monteverde-mentored Bullpups defeated host Indonesia, 100-51, in the championship match on Tuesday afternoon.

Terrence Fortea remained red-hot with 32 points in efficient 11-of-18 shooting while Ilonggo Gerry Abadiano hoisted three triples to finish with 11 markers for the Philippine team.

Aside from Abadiano, three other players traced their roots from Western Visayas in Ilonggo Menard Songcuya; Bago City, Negros Occidental native Reyland Torres; and Silay City native Harold Alarcon.

The Philippine girls’ basketball team, meanwhile, was also able to complete a three-peat after capturing the gold medal with a sweep of the elimination round on Tuesday night.

The Philippines’ boys and girls basketball teams will try to retain their championship in next year’s edition of the games, which will be held in Dumaguete City.

In boys volleyball, the Philippine squad failed to salvage at least a bronze medal finish after suffering 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 defeat to Malaysia in the classification round./PN
