Letran survives EAC, 91-89, in NCAA basketball

MANILA – The Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights battled from a double-digit deficit to score a 91-89 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball at the San Juan Arena.

Jerrick Balanza had another solid outing with 22 points on Tuesday night while Ato Ular fell a rebound short of double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.

With the win, the Knights climbed to a 3-1 win-loss slate.


Edson Batiller made his offensive contribution with 17 points while center Larry Muyang had double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights.


The Generals had a solid start. They went up by as much as 15 points before the Knights went on a strong rampage in the third behind Balanza and Batiller to take a 68-65 lead.


The Generals, however, made its last stand and was able to cut the deficit to 89-90 before Batiller split his free throws for a 91-89 Knights lead.

The General had a chance to tie but Renz Gonzales misfired his attempt.


“Talagang ‘yung convincing win, ‘di pa makuha but again, we’re still learning,” said Knights head coach Bonnie Tan. “Hinahanap pa namin ‘yung perfect combinations namin para makakuha ng magandang panalo.”


Marwin Taywan top-scored with 25 points while Gonzales and JB Maguliano contributed 13 and 10 markers, respectively, as the Generals lost back-to-back games and three of four overall./PN
