MANILA – Blackwater Elite barged into the win column after beating Phoenix Fuel Masters 92-86 in their Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup game yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Import Henry Walker led the way with 32 points and 15 rebounds for Blackwater, which tallied its first victory after losing its first three matches in the season-ending conference.
Michael DiGregorio added conference-high 28 points, including four 3-point baskets, while Riego Gamalinda, Rommel Canaleta and Raymond Aguilar combined for 19 points.
With the scores tied at 66 at the start of the fourth quarter, Blackwater leaned on baskets by Walker and Digregorio for a 74-66 lead. Phoenix then responded with its own run to tie the count at 74 on back-to-back triples by Mark Borboran.
The teams traded leads before Blackwater pulled off an 86-83 edge on hits by Walker and Digregorio. Phoenix misfired in its attempts to catch up until Elite sealed the win on free throws by Walker.
“Going into the final nine minutes of the fourth quarter, (Walker) was complaining of cramps, but he was challenging the locals to take charge,” said Elite head coach Leo Isaac. “He was shouting at his teammates inside the court to take the shot and play defense.”
Eugene Phelps and Rafael Jazul finished with 13 points apiece while Borboran added 12 for Fuel Masters, which dropped its third straight game after a 2-0 start./PN
