Pinoy IMs in 1-2 finish at Zone 3.3 Online Zonal Open Championship

Filipino IM Daniel Quizon convincingly won the Zone 3.3 Online Zonal Open Chess Championship which concluded on May 9 at the tornelo.com playing platform.

The 52-player, nine-round Swiss event, which has a classic time control of 90 minute for the first 40 moves plus 30 minutes to finish with a 30’-second increment per move, also saw IM Michael Concio Jr. taking solo 2nd place half-a-point behind Quizon. The 17-year old Quizon tallied an undefeated seven points while the 16-year-old Concio has 6½. The one-two finish by the two teen IMs also earned them the two available slots for the FIDE World Cup this coming August.

Comin in after Quizon and Concio with six points and bundled in a share of 3rd to 8th places are (tiebreaks applied) GM Novendra Priasmoro, IM Mohamad Ervan, IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher, IM Sean Winshand Cuhendi, IM Tin Jingyao, and FM Lik Zang Lye. Untitled Filipino Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo led a logjam of nine players that included top seed GM Susanto Megaranto with 5½ points apiece and occupying 9th to 17th places. All told, 24 Filipinos took part in the competition, including GM Darwin Laylo and IM John Marvin Miciano who – along with five other players – came in the five-point score group.
