BACOLOD City – Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban wants the Negros Island police to have K9 units to help fight illegal drugs.
The Police Regional Office 18 relies on the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bacolod-Silay Airport’s Aviation Security Group for its K9 needs, Gumban said.
“We are currently asking the higher-ups in Camp Crame to introduce K9 units to regional (police) offices [specifically] to help combat illegal drug smuggling at ports,” said the regional police director.
K9 units involve a canine trained to locate bombs, among other contraband items.
Shabu were being smuggled into Negros Occidental via the San Carlos City port, according to Ricky Serenio, the No. 1 drug suspect in the island region and a member of the notorious Berya drug group.
Stuffed in truck tires, the illegal substances also known as methamphetamine hydrochloride came from Toledo City in Cebu province, Serenio claimed.
In light of the information, Lieutenant Senior Grade Jimmy Oliver Vingno, commander of the Coast Guard Bacolod station, ordered their San Carlos station to conduct random checks on trucks entering and exiting the port.
Serenio also said all of these drugs were from Marawi City.
This led Gumban to believe there is a possibility of a “mega shabu laboratory” in the southern part of the Philippines.
Earlier Gumban claimed there was a spike in the sale and use of drugs in Negros during the suspension of police antidrug operations.
Police officers were ready to reengage in the antidrug campaign but were waiting for official directives, he said.
Citing “latest” intelligence reports, Gumban also claimed shabu from Iloilo City or Dumangas town in Iloilo province enter Negros Occidental via Bacolod City./PN
