BACOLOD City – Councilors asked Mayor Evelio Leonardia to give financial reward to all Bacolod City athletes who bagged medals during the Palarong Negros Island Region in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental from Feb. 24 to March 1.
“The athletes brought pride and honor to our city, and it is just appropriate to reward them,” Councilor Caesar Distrito said in a resolution that the Sangguniang Panlungsod approved on March 1.
Bacolod was the overall champion. It garnered a total of 327 medals: 156 gold, 94 silver and 77 bronze. In the para-games, the capital city of Negros Occidental also got 17 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze medals.
Distrito, appropriations and finance committee chairman, also said it is “high time that we put Bacolod in the sports map of the Philippines and show the world that we have many outstanding athletes.”
Reactivating the Bacolod City Sports Development Council will “help realize this dream … [in coordination] with the Department of Education,” he said./PN
