BACOLOD City – The House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) denied the motion for reconsideration (MR) that former vice mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson filed in relation to his dismissed protest on the results of the May 2016 polls.

The HRET issued Resolution No.18-042 dated Feb. 22, 2018, rejecting the MR for lack of merit.

It said the MR – dated Dec. 15 and filed Dec. 18 last year – has “no new relevant matterthat would justify the reversal or modification of the resolution dated Nov. 23 2017.”

In 2016, Sayson has ran for lone district representative but lost to Greg Gasataya by a slim margin – Sayson got 84,431 votes while the now congressman got 85,467.

Personally I am very thankful for the decision issued by the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal. It is a vindication on my part. [From] the very start, I [did] not commit any electoral fraud that would warrant the filling of such case,” Gasataya said in a press conferenceyesterday. “With this result, we can move on. It’s time for us to work together for the betterment of Bacolod.”

The HRET had dismissed last year the election protest that Sayson has filed seeking a manual recount of the votes casted in all clustered precincts in the city.

The tribunal found the protest “insufficient in form and substance,” as stated in the eight-page resolution signed by all eight HRET members and the chairman, Supreme Court associate justice Presbitero Velasco Jr.

Saysonran under the National Unity Party/Pamilya MKK (Magbinuligay Kita saKauswagan) while Gasataya, the Nationalist People’s Coalition/GrupoProgreso.

In his electoral protest, Sayson asked the HRET to “annul and set aside” Gasataya’s proclamation as elected lone district congressman.

But Sayson’s manifestations and admissions during pretrial and preliminary conferences and his affidavit confirmed that he had no other basis for filing the protest other than his assumptions, the HRET has said. (With Mae Singuay and Archie Rey Alipalo/PN)
