ILOILO City – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) spearheads this year’s National Maritime Week (Sept. 26 to 30).
PPA’s Port Management Office – Panay/Guimaras (PMO-PNG) and maritime industry partners have lined up activities that aim to raise public awareness on the importance of shipping in sustaining today’s global society.
This year’s theme is “Shipping: Indispensable to the World.” It focuses on the critical link between the world’s commercial fleet manned by seafarers of every nationality.
It also raises public awareness on the importance of the international shipping industry regulated by International Maritime Organization (IMO).
In this city, the National Maritime Week celebration kicked off at the Fort San Pedro Passenger Terminal with a Eucharistic Mass.
There’s also an ongoing exhibit at SM City Iloilo.
Maritime search and rescue training was also conducted in Tigbauan, Iloilo facilitated by the Women in
Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL).
On Wednesday, there was a medical and dental mission that served some 200 poor families from four identified recipient-barangays.
Also that day, a maritime skills olympics was held at John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University – Arevalo.
Yesterday, there was a basic first aid training and information drive on the safety of fisherfolks to be led by WIMAPHIL in Arevalo district.
On the other hand, the Philippine Coast Guard had a simulation of oil spill search and rescue at the Iloilo City wharf./PN
