ILOILO City – A subgroup leader of fugitive suspected drug lord Richard Prevendido surrendered to the police of Ajuy, Iloilo. But he claimed not having any knowledge where his boss was hiding.

Carlos Tejam, a 48-year-old resident of Barangay Poblacion, Ajuy, turned himself in to Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, Ajuy police chief, yesterday around 10:30 a.m.

“Tejam’s areas of drug trading were the municipality of Ajuy and neighboring towns in northern Iloilo. He went into hiding when we launched Oplan Double Barrel against drug trafficking in July last year,” said Sustento.

Tejam also surrendered a .9mm pistol yesterday.

“I have been hunting him since last year but he was too elusive. I was surprised he voluntarily surrendered to me,” Sustento told Panay News.

Tejam admitted he belonged to the Prevendido drug group and that a brother-in-law was his partner in pushing shabu, according to the police chief.

The brother-in-law was Alter Billones who was busted in an antidrug operation of the police last year and now detained at the Bureau of Jail and Penology facility, said Sustento.

But while he confessed to being Prevendido’s subgroup leader, Tejam insisted the last time he saw the suspected drug lord was two years ago yet, said Sustento.

Tejam also claimed he had no direct contact with Prevendido as it was Billones who would get their shabu supply from the elusive top drug suspect.

According to Sustento, Tejam decided to surrender because he feared for his life and safety of his family.

He trusted the Ajuy police not to harm him, Sustento added.

“We welcome his decision to surrender. We assure him na safe siya sa loob ng kulungan,” said Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon, Iloilo police director.

The police remain clueless on the whereabouts of Prevendido. But they are receiving lots of tips from informants interested to bag the reward money of a million pesos for the successful capture of the suspected drug lord.

Law enforcers hunting Prevendido aim to capture him alive, according to Tuzon.

“He has to answer the charges filed against him in court,” he stressed.

The city and provincial governments of Iloilo each offered a cash reward of P500 thousand – for a total of P1 million – to whoever could give information leading to Prevendido’s arrest./PN
