BACOLOD City – Like the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), the Police Regional Office 18 (PRO-18) wants to have its own cybercrime unit.
The PRO-18 is finding difficulty solving internet-related crimes across Negros, spokesperson Senior Inspector Armilyn Vargas admitted.
It cannot crack down on cybercrimes in the island region without tapping regional police offices in Western Visayas and Central Visayas based in Iloilo City and Cebu City, respectively, Vargas lamented.
Moreover, the cybercrime units’ “mother unit” — the one based in Camp Crame in Quezon City — shoulders the expenses for their operations, she said.
A cybercrime unit at the PRO-18 will be beneficial not only to the BCPO but also to the provincial police offices in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, said Vargas.
Meanwhile Vargas said the PRO-18 fully supports the request of Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky for a cybercrime unit for BCPO.
Wanky previously said the PRO-18 will have to channel the request to the Philippine National Police headquarters.
The BCPO head has not yet made an official request as of this writing.
Wanky had the idea following the raid of an alleged cybersex den in Barangay Handumanan last week.
The May 5 operation was led by the Women and Children Protection Center – Visayas Field Unit 7 and the BCPO’s Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), in coordination with the WCPD of the national headquarters.
Three minors were rescued, said Wanky.
The suspects — aged 20, 35 and 43 years old — were all detained at Police Station 10.
Criminal charges for cybersex, child abuse and trafficking in persons were filed against them on May 6./PN
