ILOILO City – Strong community support bolstered the campaign of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) against loose firearms, resulting in the recovery of 377 assorted firearms and 81 explosives across in Western Visayas in February.
The month-long operation also led to the arrest of 33 individuals, according to the latest PRO-6 data.
Police Brigadier General Josefino D. Ligan, director of PRO-6, reported that a total of 296 firearms and 80 explosives were voluntarily surrendered by civilians. Additionally, 43 firearms were deposited for safekeeping by owners who are currently in the process of renewing their licenses.
Ligan added that 38 more guns and one explosive were confiscated during various police operations.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office recorded the highest number of recoveries with 159 firearms and 48 explosives. This was followed by the Capiz Police Provincial Office with 51 firearms and three explosives, and the Antique Police Provincial Office with 48 firearms and nine explosives.
PRO-6 attributed the success of the campaign to the continued implementation of Tokhang Kontra Armas Luthang (TKAL), its flagship initiative against loose firearms, supported by the sustained efforts of operating units in addressing the proliferation of illegal and unlicensed weapons.
“I commend the steadfast efforts of our personnel in recovering loose firearms throughout the month of February,” Ligan stated. “This accomplishment is not only an operational success but also reflects our firm commitment to protecting our communities from the threats posed by illegal and unlicensed firearms.”
The regional director stressed that every firearm removed from circulation contributes to achieving lasting peace and security in the region, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public in preventing firearms from being used for criminal activities.
“I encourage the public to voluntarily surrender unlicensed firearms or ensure that their firearm licenses are properly renewed and updated. This is for your safety and the security of our communities,” Ligan added./PN
