MANILA – The Department of Budget and Management was asked to review the salaries of all state workers in light of the recent pay increase among soldiers and police officers.
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said on Wednesday the wages of civilian government employees should be at par with those of uniformed personnel.
President Rodrigo Duterte recently signed a resolution doubling the salaries of soldiers and police officers. A Police Officer 1, who used to receive P14,834 as base pay, would now get P29,668 a month.
Drilon urged Congress to adopt his Senate Resolution No. 575, which tasks the Budget department to recompute and adjust the base pay of civilian personnel below and above Salary Grade 11.
This will make the compensation of civil personnel and uniformed personnel “proportional,” he said.
It will “avoid wage distortion and inequality, and make the salary of government professionals at par with their counterparts in the military and the police,” Drilon said.
According to the senator, a Teacher 1 receives a monthly pay of P21,000 while a police officer gets P40,000.
“Shouldn’t the teacher, shouldn’t the health worker, shouldn’t the entry-level lawyer in the Department of Justice be the same with everybody?” he said.
Drilon also sought to eliminate overlaps among salary grade allocations, taking into consideration differences in duties, responsibilities, length of service, and other logical bases of differentiation of the positions./PN
