MANILA – Magnolia Hotshots turned things around in the second half to clobber Kia Picanto 124-77 in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Justin Melton led the charge with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for Hotshots, which improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate and tied with Phoenix Fuel Masters and NLEX Road Warriors on second place.
Ian Sangalang chipped in 21 points and 9 rebounds, rookie Robbier Herndon added 14 points, Paul Lee had 13 markers, and Peter June Simon and Jiovani Jalalon contributed 11 points apiece for Hotshots.
Down by as much as 7 points early in the game, Hotshots banked on inside hits by Sangalang to snatch a 34-28 lead. Picanto responded with its own rally to lead 49-47 at the half.
Hotshots had a strong start in the third canto. Consecutive baskets by Lee allowed it to build a 70-56 edge, which grew further 81-58 with baskets from Simon, Sangalang and Melton.
Magnolia continued to pounce on the erratic plays of Picanto in the final quarter with fast-break hits from Jalalon and built its largest lead of the match at 47 points on back-to-back hits by Herdon.
“It’s a very important game for us. Coming from a loss against Ginebra, we need to bounce back and start winning again, especially since it’s our first game of the year,” said Hotshots head coach Chito Victolero.
Jay-R Reyes finished with double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Rashawn McCarthy, Reden Celda and Ilonggo Ronald Tubid had 11 points each for Kia, which dropped to a 0-3 card./PN
