ILOILO City – Outgoing city mayor Jerry Treñas capped his final days in office by unveiling a massive unity-themed mural that now brightens a portion of Solis Street near the Muelle Loney area, celebrating the metro’s cultural renaissance and collective spirit.
Titled “Ugnayan-Iloilo” and bearing the theme “Paghili-usa” (Unity), the mural is the product of three days of collaboration among nine art collectives from Luzon and the Visayas, alongside artists from Cebu, Bacolod, Aklan, Capiz, and Iloilo.
The project was spearheaded by Hiugyon Creatives and Linangan Collective, with the mural featuring contributions from prominent artists including Manny Garibay and Otto Neri.
“I am happy to unveil this mural painting, a symbol of unity, collaboration, and creativity together with my wife, Rosalie; my daughter, Mayor Raisa; and my son, Paolo,” Treñas said during the Saturday, June 29 ceremony, held two days before his term officially ends.
More than an aesthetic addition to the city, the mural was described by Treñas as a visual representation of the spirit that has defined Iloilo’s transformation under his leadership.
“As I prepare to step down from office this Monday, this project resonates deeply with me. It represents not only the beauty of coming together but also the enduring spirit of bayanihan that continues to drive Iloilo City forward,” he said.
Artist groups such as Himbon, Sigahum, Tagatig, Orange Project, and Oval also took part in the creative endeavor, which joins a growing collection of public art in the city — a movement that has flourished during Treñas’ administration.
Treñas expressed hope that the next administration, led by his daughter and mayor-elect Raisa Treñas-Chu, would sustain the momentum in promoting public art, cultural expression, and inclusive civic participation.
“I leave with the firm belief that Iloilo City’s growth, creativity, and unity will continue to flourish because of the strength of its people and its communities,” he said.
Over recent years, Iloilo City has embraced a more art-integrated urban landscape, with murals and installations becoming key features in its identity as a “City of Love” rooted in shared heritage and innovation./PN
