ILOILO City – Bad weather forced 129 schools in Iloilo Province and Iloilo City to suspend face-to-face classes on Monday, August 10, disrupting the education of 112,758 learners as tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay enhanced the southwest monsoon battering parts of Western Visayas.
Across the region, face-to-face classes were suspended in 220 public schools.
Data from the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 showed that 63 of the affected schools were in Iloilo Province and 66 were in Iloilo City.
In Iloilo City, Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu ordered the suspension of in-person classes from
preschool to senior high school and directed schools to shift to alternative delivery modalities.
“With light to moderate rain showers expected throughout the day, face-to-face classes from Pre-School to Senior High School will shift to Alternative Delivery Modalities today, August 10, 2026. The safety and well-being of our students remain our priority,” the mayor announced.
The weather disturbances also affected 2,943 families, or 10,544 individuals, in 43 barangays across Western Visayas, according to the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center report of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6 and Situational Report No. 3 of the Office of Civil Defense Region 6.
Aklan recorded the largest number of affected residents at 2,317 families, or 7,864 individuals. Iloilo followed with 586 families, or 2,515 people, while Antique registered 40 families, or 165 individuals.
Of the total, 71 families composed of 256 individuals remained in evacuation centers, while 74 families, or 283 people, were staying outside evacuation facilities.
Strong winds and heavy rains also damaged 72 houses across the region, seven of which were destroyed and 65 partially damaged.
Iloilo recorded the highest number of damaged houses at 39, including two destroyed and 37 partially damaged.
Antique reported 25 damaged houses — five destroyed and 20 partially damaged — while eight houses in Aklan sustained partial damage.
The DSWD-6 has extended P175,750 in assistance to affected families, including P106,250 for Iloilo and P69,500 for Aklan.
The agency said it has P168.21 million in available relief resources, consisting of a P3-million standby fund and P165.21 million worth of food and nonfood items.
Meanwhile, 67 passengers, 30 rolling cargoes and two vessels were stranded at Alegria Port in Guimaras and the port in Barangay Union, Nabas, Aklan, from 8 a.m. to noon, Philippine Coast Guard data showed.
The Philippine Ports Authority’s Port Management Office also reported suspended trips involving Montenegro Lines at the Port of Caticlan; Starlite Ferries and Marina Ferries Inc. from Alegria to Roxas, Oriental Mindoro; Montenegro Lines from the Iloilo Fastcraft Terminal to Palawan; and Ron Jayredine from Sibunag, Guimaras to Pulupandan, Negros Occidental./PN
