KALIBO, Aklan – The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) is open to federalism.
President Rodrigo Duterte has been pushing for the Philippines’ transition to a federal form of government.
But the CPP wants a “clear picture” of Duterte’s proposed federalism, said Maria Concepcion “Concha” Araneta-Bocala, consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).
“The CPP is open to federalism,” she told a news conference here yesterday.
“What we are [more] interested in is the economic agenda of President Duterte, whether [we are in] a presidential, parliamentary or federal [system of] government,” said Bocala.
The NDFP is the political arm of the CPP.
Bocala joined the launching of the Aklan chapter of the nationwide peace network Kapayapaan in this capital town.
Kapayapaan is a multi-sector movement seeking just and lasting peace, according to Malinao mayor Wilbert Ariel Igoy, the Aklan head convener.
“It is quite evident that the significance of the ongoing peace process has not reached the people who will benefit the most and who should be active stakeholders,” said Igoy. “There is a need for a systematic and sustainable information and education campaign.”
Igoy is also the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Aklan.
“Kapayapaan believes that as Filipinos committed to just and lasting peace, we must contribute to the development of a strong grassroots, [and a] nationwide and broad-based peace constituency and movement that can help get the talks back on its tracks,” he said. (PNA)
