ILOILO City – The Philippine Red Cross, in partnership with the British Red Cross, Korean Red Cross Society and CUbe Ltd., launched its super typhoon “Yolanda” recovery program on Oct. 14 at the Ajuy municipal gymnasium.
The ceremony turned over projects that provided shelter, livelihood, educational and healthcare services to the beneficiaries of the 42 municipalities, two cities and 1,901 barangays. These projects were received by various municipal representatives.
Furthermore, rice farmers who were most affected by super typhoon “Yolanda” were given the opportunity to conduct farmers field school at the Ajuy gymnasium, while a trade fair was established at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. Funds were also transferred to various rice farmer cooperatives and beneficiaries during the recovery program.
“Yolanda” affected around 865,000 people in the agriculture sector, and caused an average loss of 74 percent of standing crops as well as 60 percent of tree crops. Furthermore, fishing communities lost 65 percent of their fishing equipment.
Sen. Richard J. Gordon, chairperson and CEO of the Philippine Red Cross; Atty. Oscar P. Palabyab, Red Cross secretary general; and British Red Cross country manager Sonia Judith Morales, spearheaded the turnover ceremony.
Also present during the event were Gov. Arthur D. Defensor, Rep. Raul “Buboy” Tupas, Ajur mayor Jett Rojas, and Balasan mayor Manuel Ganzon./PN
