ILOILO City – To prepare schools for the resumption of classes this June, the 2017 Brigada Eskwela in Western Visayas was launched on Friday at the Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
The launching, led by the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6, gathered schools division superintendents from five provinces of the region and other stakeholders.
This year’s Brigada Eskwela was themed, “Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan.”
DepEd assistant secretary for legal and legislative affairs Tonisito Umali said Brigada Eskwela is “ensuring conditions of the schools.”
“Schools must be safe and their facilities ready for the classes,” he stressed.
DepEd is currently conceptualizing “Brigada Eskwela Plus” – a newer version of Brigada Eskwela that will become a “year-round” program in improving school facilities in partnership with stakeholders.
Once realized, Umali said, a Brigada Eskwela Plus Seal of Excellence Award will be given to local government units as recognition for their help in improving schools.
Meanwhile, DepEd-6 regional director Ma. Gemma Ledesma urged principals, teachers, students, community volunteers and other stakeholders to help clean classrooms and schools grounds, and repair and repaint school buildings, among others.
Brigada Eskwela started in 2003 as a voluntary program that encourages the community to help prepare school facilities for the opening of classes every school year.
In 2008, it became mandatory for all schools nationwide. (PNA/PN)
