ILOILO City – Retired members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and war veterans were demanding for an increase in their monthly pensions.
A consultation and dialogue was conducted at the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) to hear their concerns on Thursday. Some 100 retired men uniform in Western Visayas attended.
The retirees and veterans wanted their monthly pension increased from P5,000 to P20,000, according to retired police director Leopoldo Bataoil, now congressman of the 2nd District of Pangasinan and the dialogue facilitator.
Bataoil is the chairman of the congressional committee on veteran’s affairs and welfare. He said a bill was filed in Congress in 2010 increasing the pension of police and AFP retirees and veterans but it was not given priority.
“Budgetary constraints” was always cited as reason, he lamented.
There are about 8,000 retired policemen, soldiers and veterans nationwide, said Bataoil, and the government would have to spend around P1.6 billion to increase their pension.
“They are dying at the rate of 300 per month. With that, hindi aabutin ng three years, mawawalan tayo ng veterans (in about three years, we will lose our veterans),” said Bataoil.
The increase, he said, “would really be a big help for them, especially for their maintenance (medicines),” he added. (PNA)
