MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte promised Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo that she will not be removed from the vice presidency.

“I will assure Leni (Robredo) and the Bicolanos that you will have her until the very end of her term,” Duterte said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bicol International Airport on Thursday, Dec. 8.

Robredo has resigned as chairwoman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) — and, in effect, as Cabinet member — Monday, Dec. 3 but announced that she was stepping down a day before.

She cited the text message she received from Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco Jr. relaying Duterte’s instructions through Presidential Assistant Bong Go for her “to desist from attending all Cabinet meetings” starting Dec. 5.

Duterte later assigned Evasco as HUDCC chairman.

In her resignation letter, Robredo told Duterte that the latter’s order “has effectively made it impossible for me to do my job.”

And in a statement released Sunday, Dec. 4, Robredo said she believes the order was part of “the plot to steal the vice presidency.”

“I have chosen to ignore this and focus on the job at hand,” she said. “But the events of recent days indicate that this plot is now being set into motion.”

On Thursday Duterte stressed there is “no such thing as removal of a vice president.”/PN
