MANILA – Filipino boxer Merlito Sabillo is staking his Asean Boxing Federation (ABF) light flyweight belt when he faces Crison Omayao in the main event of “Fist of Glory” card on Oct. 20 at the SM City Bacolod Parking Area.
It will be the Toboso, Negros Occidental-native Sabillo’s first title defense of the championship he won at the expense of Indonesian Jack Amisa last June in Bacolod City.
The victory will also be important for Sabillo. He needs to win at least two of his last three matches for his Philippine Games and Amusements Board (GAB) suspension to play abroad be lifted.
Sabillo is temporarily banned to fight outside of the country after suffering twin defeats in 2016 against Japanese boxers Ryuya Yamanaka and Riku Kano before tasting a win anew in his last fight against Amisa.
“This fight is important for me to win so that I will be able to fight abroad again and possibly have another shot at world championship,” said Sabillo, a former WBO world minimumweight champion.
Sabillo is set to parade an impressive 26-4-1 win-loss-draw ring record, including 13 stoppage wins, while fellow veteran boxer Omayao has 22-14-4 boxing slate, with seven knockout wins.
Aside from Sabillo, also a number of Negrense fighters are set to fight in the undercard of fight that was presented by Maris-Monju-Mayor Bing Leonardia Boxing development Program as part of the annual Masskara Festival.
