MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses started its title-retention bid on a bright note by winning their first two games in the UAAP Season 80 women’s beach volleyball on Thursday at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
The Golden Tigresses pair of Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray first scored a come-from-behind 21-23, 21-19, 15-11 win over De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ May Luna and Ernestine Tiamzon on Thursday.
Rondina and Viray then followed this up later in the night with a 21-9, 21-8 straight set triumph over Ilongga Roma Doromal and Audrey Paran of National University Lady Bulldogs.
“Hindi kami mag-iiwan ng salita kung itutuloy-tuloy namin ang panalo pero tatrabahuhin namin itong tournament,” said Rondina, who captured the women’s title last year with Jem Guttierez.
Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws pair of Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza also had a strong start after winning over Ateneo Lady Eagles and University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.
Pons and Atienza first scored a 21-18, 21-14 win over Lady Eagles’ Bea De Leon and Julia Samonte before coming out with a 21-8, 21-6 rout over Lady Maroons’ Diana Carlos and Bacolodnon Arielle Estranero.
Lady Spikers, meanwhile, bounce back with a 21-14, 21-10 win over Adamson Lady Falcons’ Bernadeth Flora and Chrislyn Uy. Lady Maroons also scored a 21-19, 21-13 win over University of the East Lady Warriors’ Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat.
Lady Falcons’ Flora and Uy also notched its first win later in the day with a 21-18, 21-19 sweep over Lady Bulldogs’ Doromal and Paran, while Lady Eagles’ De Leon and Samonte turned back Lady Warriors’ Abil and Dacaymat, 17-21, 22-20, 15-10./PN
