MANILA – Sen. Grace Poe has called on the government to implement transport solutions that can benefit the marginalized.
“It should ensure safe, comfortable and accessible transport for all Filipinos especially the poor, elderly, persons with disability, residents in far-flung areas and other marginalized sectors,” Poe said.
The chairwoman of the Committee on Public Services made the statement during the United Kingdom Transport Solutions seminar held recently in Mandaluyong City.
Poe also encouraged the use of technological innovations to improve the country’s transport system.
A “multi-modal” system, according to her, should be implemented to complement the various forms of land, air, and water transportation.
“Traffic woes give commuters a daily dosage of indignity and torment, loss of time for family and impact on health, on top of massive economic cost,” she added.
A Japan International Cooperation Agency study showed that, in 2014, the Philippine economy loses P2.4 billion a day due to traffic congestion.
Poe is set to resume her hearing on the bill granting President Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers to solve the country’s worsening traffic situation on Sept. 22./PN
