San Beda, CSB Blazers stay unbeaten in NCAA basketball

MANILA – San Beda University Red Lions got its bearings going in the fourth quarter for a 73-59 win over San Sebastian College Stags in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball yesterday at the San Juan Arena.

From a tightly-contested match until midway in the fourth period, the Red Lions leaned on timely shots from Ilonggo Clint Doliguez and Calvin Oftana to build a 12-point advantage.

The Stags attempted to come close but the defending champions Red Lions drained three straight triples from Oftana and Evan Nelle as the lead reached its largest at 73-57.

Nelle, Donald Tankoua and James Kwekuteye top-scored with 14 markers apiece while Oftana fell short of triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Red Lions rises to 4-0.


On Thursday evening, the College of St. Benilde Blazers cruised to its best start in over a decade. It hold off Mapua University Cardinals, 71-67, at the Mapua Gym in Intramuros, Manila.


It was a back-and-forth action for both teams before the Blazers surged to a 69-62 edge on a triple by Ilonggo Edward Dixon but the Cardinals countered with a run to come to within 67-69 with 3.2 seconds left.

Free throws by Dixon sealed the win for CSB.


Justin Gutang tallied 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists before exiting late in the match due to an injury, while Clement Leutcheu and Jimboy Pasturan had 11 markers each for the 3-0 Blazers./PN
