MANILA – San Miguel Beermen survived a tough stand by Phoenix Fuel Masters to eke out a 109-107 victory in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Beermen tallied its third straight victory and tied with NLEX Road Warriors and TNT KaTropa, all posting a 7-3 win-loss record.

San Miguel hopes to win a “twice-to-beat” incentive by defeating Meralco Bolts on Sunday.

Import Terrence Watson led the scoring for Beermen on Wednesday night with double-double 26 points and 11 rebounds.

June Mar Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot added 24 points apiece while Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter contributed 15 and 13, respectively.

Down by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, Beermen scored via Fajardo and Watson to come to within 51-52. Cabagnot then unloaded 7 straight points to push Beermen to a 56-52 lead at the half.

Beermen rallied in the third frame behind Cabagnot and Lassiter for a 70-59 edge. Fuel Masters tried to catch up 71-78 but inside hits by Watson allowed San Miguel to lead 86-77 heading into fourth.

San Miguel was still up 88-77 when Phoenix executed a huge run behind Joseph Eriobu and Brandon Brown to get close 96-98. Beermen extended the lead 100-96 but Fuel Masters scored 4 straight points to tie the count 100-all.

Beermen then zoomed to a 6-0 run behind Watson and Fajardo for a 106-100 lead before Fuel Masters made its last stand 107-105 on a triple by JC Intal. Two free throws by Cabagnot sealed the win for San Miguel.

“I realized that when you’re on top and you’re the team to beat, it’s really hard to win,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria. “I have to congratulate Phoenix na in spite of a no-bearing game, nandoon pa rin iyong pride nila.”

Phoenix ended its Governors’ Cup campaign with 2-9. Brown led the way with 30 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocks, while Negrense Jeff Chan added 18 points./PN
