ILOILO City – A resident of San Miguel, Iloilo was accused of assaulting a police officer.
Sunday Cansancio was confined at the Western Visayas Medical Center for the gunshot wound he sustained when the service firearm of Chief Inspector Conrado Rances II went off during grappling.
The 37-year-old Cansancio was currently under tight police watch at the hospital in Mandurriao district.
On the other hand, Rances of the Police Regional Office 6’s Finance Division was “restricted” at the San Miguel police station.
Municipal police chief Senior Inspector Francis Albert Fortunado said they were treating Cansancio as an assault suspect.
Rances was buying at a burger joint on Roxas Street, Barangay 1, San Miguel at around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 when three drunken men – one of them was Cansancio – approached him and asked, “Insa taga-diin timo haw (Where are you from)?” Fortunado said, citing initial investigation.
The 35-year-old Rances, who was living in Barangay 8, San Miguel, introduced himself as a police officer.
Then Cansancio told Rances, “Sin-o kaw gid haw? Kay pulis kaw, tiruhon mo ko (So you’re going to shoot me just because you’re a policeman? Who do you think you are)?” Fortunado said.
“Rances was holding the gun tucked in his waist when Cansancio grabbed it. They grappled for the firearm,” said Fortunado.
“Nahulog ang baril ng ating pulis at pumutok, na tumama sa kaliwang paa ni Cansancio (The gun fell and went off, hitting Cansancio on the left foot),” Fortunado added.
Rances surrendered to the San Miguel police station and turned over his service firearm, a .9mm pistol, after the incident./PN
