ILOILO City – An Aviation Security Group (ASG) officer shot a security guard during a simulation exercise at the Caticlan jetty port in Malay, Aklan.

Port security guard Nhick Tanan, 29, sustained a gunshot wound on the right chest.

The incident halted the drill that started 8 p.m. on Friday.

Police Officer 2 Benedicto Etrata may have forgotten to completely unload his firearm, according to Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapas, director of the Aklan Police Provincial Office.

Manlapas said the exercise aimed to simulate terrorists setting up a barricade at the port. Tanan was acting as a “terrorist.”

Etrata “may have removed the magazine but forgot to cock the firearm and thus failed to notice the remaining bullet in the barrel,” Manlapas said.

Tanan was taken to the St. Gabriel Hospital in the capital town of Kalibo where he was confined.

“The victim is now in stable condition,” said Manlapas.

Etrate was placed in the custody of the Malay municipal police station.

An administrative charge for negligence resulting to physical injury may be filed against him./PN
