NEW WASHINGTON, Aklan – The application for telecommunications operation in the country is open to any interested company, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) clarified.
President Rodrigo Duterte gave the DICT until the last week of March to encourage investors to set up shop as a third telecoms company in the Philippines.
Duterte wanted to break to so-called “duopoly” in the telecommunications business in a bid to improve services, particularly internet speed.
Some Chinese and Indian companies have already expressed intent to join the industry, DICT undersecretary Mon Ibrahim said.
There is only a month left before the deadline of application.
“We are doing everything to come up with a third [company],” Ibrahim told the press at Sampaguita Gardens. “You already know what would happen to us if we could not meet the deadline.”
Ibrahim was in town for the 6th Visayas ICT Cluster Organization Conference from Feb. 22 to 23.
The conference has three main goals: helping local government units jump into the 21st century with e-governance initiatives, building sustainable start-up environments in different regions, and positioning local communities as prime spots for IT businesses./PN
