MANILA – The Senate Committee on Public Order is not keen on inviting the brother of slain Albuera mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. in today’s hearing.
Instead, the committee investigating the country’s extra-judicial killings has invited the lawyer of the Espinosa family, said Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Nov. 9.
“‘Yung brother, kasi hearsay din ang ite-testify niya. Let’s see. Ang lawyer, siya ang lawyer ng family who can very well represent ang mag-ama ang members ng family,” Lacson, panel chief, said.
Sen. Leila de Lima last Tuesday said she will ask the public order panel to invite Ramon Espinosa, the mayor’s elder brother who claimed that Rolando was only made to sign an affidavit already containing the names of alleged drug protectors, to the hearing.
The mayor was killed in a supposed shootout inside the Baybay City Provincial Jail while being served a search warrant for illegal possession of firearms and dangerous drugs.
Lacson said they have also invited Chief Superintendent Marvin Marcos of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 8 and CIDG head Chief Inspector Leo Laraga of Northern Leyte.
“Kasi ang nangyayari ginagawa yata ng Philippine National Police, just to comply with the procedure nila na mag-coordinate sila, dinadaan na lang sa text message… Is it the proper way of coordinating? ‘Di ba mas maganda personal or direct ang coordination mag-raid kami sa ano, ito coordination namin,” the former police chief explained.
He also questioned the issuance of the search warrants by a judge based in Basey, Samar.
“Nakakapagtaka lang bakit sa Basey ka kukuha ng warrant tapos lahat ng raids ng CIDG bakit isang judge lang pinagkukunan?”
Meanwhile, Lacson said they are also looking into the possibility of sending a team to Leyte to interview other inmates who could be eyewitnesses to the crime./PN
