MANILA – The San Sebastian College Lady Stags leaned on the powerful hits of Gretchel Soltones to score a 25-22, 25-13, 25-13 win over the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament the other night at the San Juan Arena.
Soltones, the reigning back-to-back MVP, uncorked 19 points – including 18 attacks – to lead the way for the Lady Stags, which remained on top of the standings with a 7-0 win-loss record.
The victory secured a Final Four slot for the Lady Stags, which could earn an outright finals seat and a thrice-to-beat advantage if it sweeps all of its nine matches in the single-round robin tournament.
Still ready to challenge the Lady Stag’ perfect slate are the Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates on Jan. 23 and defending champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers on Jan. 25, in a rematch of last year’s finals.
“I am happy with our performance today but our target is to be No. 1 but we still have two games to go and we know Lyceum and St. Benilde are both strong teams,” said Lady Stags mentor Roger Gorayeb.
The Lady Stags unloaded 38 spikes against the Lady Altas’ 18, along with 10 service aces. The Lady Altas, however, took advantage of their height advantage to deny 10 hits from theirj opponents.
Lourdes Clemente top-scored with 10 points, off six attacks and four blocks, for the Lady Altas, which suffered its third defeat to send them on the brink of being eliminated./PN
