MANILA – Mahindra Floodbuster cruised to its second straight win in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup by beating the Meralco Bolts, 105-92, on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Philip Paniamogan led the way with a career-high 25 points, at seven-of-nine shooting from the three-point line, for the Floodbuster, which moved up to a 2-5 win-loss slate tying the NLEX Road Warriors.
Nicholas Salva, Alex Mallari and Jason Deutchman added 13 points apiece, while Michael Digregorio and Russel Escoto had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Floodbuster, which still has a glimmer of hope in possibly making it to the final eight.
From a tight exchange early in the first frame, the Floodbuster surged to a 22-15 lead on triples by Mallari and Deutchman. The Bolts rallied to take the lead at 24-23 on a basket by Justin Chua, but a buzzer beater by LA Revilla gave the Floodbuster the lead.
Floodbuster continued its strong offense in the second quarter on three straight triples by Paniamogan to build its largest lead at 48-31. The Bolts, however, was able to chop it down to 52-42 at halftime.
In the third frame, Floodbuster’s Paniamogan and Bolts’ Reynel Hugnatan had an exchange of triples but the former’s team remained on top, 63-50. The Bolts came to within 63-59 but triples by Nico Elorde and Salva gave the Floodbuster a 73-64 lead.
Mahindra went on a strong start in the final frame as it built a 86-69 lead on conversions by Escoto, Salva and Jason Ballesteros. The Bolts then made its last push to come to within 86-79.
But consecutive triples by Paniamogan and Deutchman followed by five straight points by Digregorio increased Floodbuster’s lead to 101-85 before the Bolts trimmed the final deficit on conversions by Chris Newsome and Eduardo Daquioag.
Bacolodnon Hugnatan finished with a career-high tying 28 points, including three triples, while Newsome chipped in with 19 markers for the Bolts, which slid down to last place with a 2-6 win-loss slate./PN
