ILOILO City – Keeping the city’s streets safe is not a one-way affair. The public’s cooperation is crucial, said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
Some drivers follow traffic rules and regulations, most especially speed limits, only when there are traffic officers around, he observed.
“Pero pagtalikod sang law enforcer, ara na naman,” Galvez pointed out.
This lack of driver discipline contributes to the disorder on the streets, he lamented.
Galvez was reacting to the accusation that the city government had been remiss in enforcing the city ordinance that set speed limits on motor vehicles.
According to Councilor Joshua Alim, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog failed to create an oversight committee for Regulation Ordinance No. 2015-283. He authored this ordinance that was approved just last year.
Galvez denied this. In fact, he said, just three weeks ago, the city mayor even discussed with the committee the ordinance’s implementation not only on the Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue (formerly Diversion Road) but also at the coastal road.
The committee meets every Tuesday, he added, and it had long been deliberating on the needed radar speed guns to check the speeds of vehicles.
Galvez acknowledged that the lack of speed guns hamper the effective enforcement of the speed limit ordinance.
“Indi matuod nga napabay-an ina. Nahimo sang mayor kag aton law enforcers ang ila nga bahin in the implementation of the ordinance ugaling nabudlayan kita sa pag implementar tungod wala kita sang speed guns,” he explained.
On Oct. 8, a fatal crash of a sports car on Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue in Barangay Dungon B, Jaro district killed 19-year-old Chester Lane Go of Arevalo district and injured 20-year-old John Trevor Galindez of Oton, Iloilo.
According to witnesses, the car driven by Galindez was running some 200 km per hour.
The car crashed against the center island of the national highway, turned turtle to the other side of the road, then hit an Isuzu Sportivo./PN
