ILOILO City – A special job fair will be organized for overseas Filipino workers (OFW) from Western Visayas who were repatriated from Kuwait.
Regional Director Johnson Cañete of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said they will set a date for the job fair and gather companies to join.
Following the death of Ilongga domestic helper Joanna Daniela Demafelis of Sara, Iloilo in Kuwait, President Rodrigo Duterte appealed to distressed OFWs in the oil-rich Gulf State to return home.
Demafelis was found in a freezer in an abandoned apartment. Kuwaiti authorities said she was beaten to death. Her remains were flown to Sara on Feb. 17.
Cañete said DOLE provided the Demafelis family, particularly the father of Joanna, a hog-raising livelihood as initial assistance.
Aside from the job fair, the repatriated migrant workers are also entitled to P5,000 financial assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, said Connie Binondo, officer-in-charge of the program and services division of OWWA.
They can also avail themselves of the “Balik Pinas! Balik Hanapbuhay! (Return to the Philippines! Return to Work) program. They could get up to P20,000 worth of livelihood assistance.
On Feb. 19, Binondo said, three Western Visayan repatriated OFWs who reported to OWWA Region 6.
“Their P5,000 financial assistance will be released” she said.
There is also a P200,000 livelihood assistance for Demafelis’ family; P50,000 for the education of her youngest sister Joyce who wanted to finish her last semester in college as a Criminology student; and another P50,000 for the medical assistance of a niece, according to Binondo. (PNA)
