KALIBO, Aklan – Tricycles operating beyond their franchise routes risk being apprehended and fined.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) Kalibo District Office issued a warning after receiving complaints from multi-cab drivers and operators adversely affected by the competition posed by the operation of out-of-route tricycles.

LTO Kalibo acting chief Marlon Velez assured multi-cab operators and drivers that the office would resume the campaign against these tricycles.

Previously, apprehended out-of-route tricycles based in Kalibo were fined P6,000 for conveying passengers to Banga and Numancia towns.

“Tayo rin binabantayan ng mga tricycle drivers. Pag nag-o-operate tayo sa highway, hindi sila nagpapasakay,” said Velez.

Although multi-cabs are allowed to transport passengers up to 50 percent of their capacity under quarantine restrictions, many drivers are struggling to make up for their lost income. The competition posed by out-of-route tricycles further compound their already difficult situation.

LTO Kalibo’s office in Barangay Tigayon temporarily suspended its operation after one of its staff contracted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) last week. Operation resumed yesterday./PN
