DRUG TEST. Policemen submit urine samples for drug testing at the Police Regional Office 6 in Camp Delgado, Iloilo City. A total of 1,300 police officers attending a seminar were subjected to the unscheduled drug test yesterday, March 12, 2018. IAN PAUL CORDERO/PN

ILOILO City – As part of the continuous internal cleansing in the Philippine National Police (PNP), 1,300 police personnel in Western Visayas were subjected to an unscheduled drug test yesterday at the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

These cops from across the region were gathered at the PRO-6 yesterday for a “squadding” orientation and seminar.

As the seminar was ongoing, however, they were ordered to submit urine samples for drug testing.

“This also aims to give our policemen the moral ascendancy to operate against illegal drug traffickers,” said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.

Gorero did not give any specific date of the results’ release.

The results of those who would test positive for illegal drugs would still be subjected to confirmatory tests in Metro Manila, explained Gorero.

Police officers who fail the drug test risk being dismissed from the police service.

“There is no place in the PRO-6 for police officers involved in illegal drugs. The PNP does not tolerate members who violate the law,” stressed Gorero.

Regarding the “squadding” seminar, Gorero said this program aims to improve the competency and discipline of police personnel.

Every police station or unit is required to form squads of 10 police officers each.

The squad leaders have the task of monitoring and supervising the conduct and performance of their squad members./PN
