ILOILO City – There are no disciples of the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Western Visayas, said the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

The PRO-6 issued the statement following the spread of a false report on the alleged presence of Islamist terrorists in Region 10 and that one of their targets was Iloilo City.

“No cause to panic,” said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.

He then urged people not to spread false reports that could unnecessarily alarm the public.

Gorero assured Western Visayans that the PRO-6 has the capability to monitor armed groups “because we have a small area…We ask the cooperation of the public. Be proactive.”

Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director, ordered all unit commanders and police chiefs to be on alert.

“Do not leave your stations unmanned. Carry long firearms,” said Binag.

The PRO-6, he said, is coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines for a strengthened intelligence network.

Social media recently circulated what would eventually turn out to be a hoax memorandum from the Police Regional Office 10 (PRO-10) – Regional Intelligence Division based in Cagayan de Oro City on the alleged presence of ISIS bombers in southern Philippines.

The memorandum quoted a text message that the PRO-10 purportedly received. It read (unedited): “Pls. Pass this information immediately to save lives!!! ISIS bombers and expert bomb makers are already in the Phil. They passed through Indonesia to Borneo and finally in the region of Mindanao by pretending an ordinary fishermen. Conversation made by their group was cop up by intelligence detector patrolling the coastal way of Zamboanga. Their targets are the populated areas, malls and plazas. Cities mentioned are Zamboanga, Davao, Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, and cities of Northern and Southern Luzon. They are based now in the remote provinces along with the local & some foreign jihadists but they will move closer to their target areas…”

PRO-10 denied issuing such memo./PN
