BACOLOD City – The city government will penalize waste segregation policy violators starting mid-October.
As of Sept. 29, all the 61 city barangays were made aware of the “no segregation, no collection” policy that began on Sept. 1, said Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, who chairs the Solid Waste Action Team (SWAT).
Village officials were provided with garbage collection schedules as a part of SWAT’s information and education campaign.
IPM-Construction Development Corp., the contracted garbage collector, gathers biodegradable waste every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, and non-biodegradable waste every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
“We will not issue warnings anymore,” Familiaran stressed.
Familiaran said unsegregated waste owners will be fined from P500 to P1,000.
“We need the cooperation of everybody,” he added. Familiaran emphasized the role of barangay officials in information dissemination.
The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates local government units to implement and enforce solid waste management policies within their respective jurisdictions.
The law seeks the adoption of a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program targeting solid waste avoidance and volume reduction through minimization measures while giving consideration to and ensuring the protection of the public health and environment. (PNA/PN)
