MANILA – Eleven men were arrested by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives in a hotel in Taguig City in an operation that yielded various kinds of prohibited drugs, including a so-called “party drug.”

The PDEA’s Special Enforcement Service (SES) agents staged an entrapment operation inside Room 609 of the Seda Hotel in Bonifacio Global City.

They seized 20 ecstasy tablets weighing 8.691 grams valued at an estimated P40,000; two sachets of shabu weighing 0.0981 gram worth P500; 12 bottles of 530.8-ml gamma butyrolactone (GBL) worth P300,000; and a bottle of white capsules.

All these had a total value of P340,500, the PDEA said.

PDEA director general Aaron N. Aquino identified the suspects as Edmond Remegio, 33; Malik Coronel, 33; Manuel Valdes, 34, an insurance agent; Jake Tolentino, 33, an insurance claims processor; Jose Carlo Torres, 38, an engineer; Mario Aclan, 27, a makeup artist; Angelo Padasas, 28, an office staffer; Jevel Ucero, 22, a student; Carlo Kasala, 25, a physician; Legui Brylle Gonzales, 28, an account manager; and Bryan Dizon, 20, a software developer.

Government antidrug agents swooped down on the hotel room at around 10 a.m. on Nov. 26.

The GBL, a precursor of gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), is commonly referred to as a “club drug” or “date rape” drug. It is usually abused by young people in bars, rave parties and clubs, and often placed in alcoholic beverages.

GBL and GBH abuse results in euphoria, increased sex drive and tranquility, said the PDEA.

Valdes, the target of the operation, and company were caught using these illegal drugs.

Remegio and Coronel will be charged with violation of Section 5 (Sale of Dangerous Drugs) in relation to sections 26 (Conspiracy to Sell), 11 (Possession of Dangerous Drugs) and 12 (Possession of Drug Paraphernalia) of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Charges for violation of Section 15 (Use of Dangerous Drugs) will be filed against the others.

All suspects were in the custody of the PDEA’s SES. (PNA)
