KALIBO, Aklan – Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Emmanuel Soviet Dela Cruz wanted to make the talibong (fighting sword) a heritage of the province.
Dela Cruz said this yesterday during the SP session on the creation of the Aklan Arts Council.
The talibong was used by the locals to protect themselves during the Spanish and Japanese occupations in the 1900’s.
Currently, the swords are manufactured in two of the province’s towns: Libacao and Malinao.
“The Aklan Arts Council will declare the talibong as a provincial heritage once it is established,” said Dela Cruz.
The Aklan Museum on Martelino Street houses some of the swords.
The provincial government celebrates the Talibong Festival every April. /PN
