BACOLOD City – Councilor Caesar Distrito wants the city government to give village watchmen, or tanods, a monthly allowance worth P2,000.

But this will not be for all tanods, Distrito said.

Under the proposal that he authored, only village watchmen who perform “auxiliary duties in their respective police stations or with the Public Order and Safety Office” will receive the monthly allowance.

Distrito said the Sangguniang Panlungsod already approved the proposal on Tuesday. It is now pending approval at the Office of the Mayor.

The proposed ordinance aims to recognize the importance of barangay tanods in maintaining peace and order in their respective communities, Distrito added.

According to the councilor, the tanods must serve as force multipliers to assist the police and the city government in implementing local security measures.

Those who have been tanods for at least two years, have undergone self-defense training and basic law enforcement seminar are qualified to avail themselves of the monthly allowance under the proposed ordinance.

They must also be 18 to 60 years old, physically fit and must perform auxiliary duties for at least 72 hours a month.

Auxiliary duties include assisting the police in conducting patrol operations, assisting in traffic management and enforcement, and being assigned as guard on duty in public schools, police stations or in areas with high incidence of crimes in their barangays./PN
