BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts swept its group matches in the 2018 National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Bacolod leg at the Natalio G. Velez Gym in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
Thunderbolts finished on top of Bracket A (4-0) after a lopsided 109-80 victory over St. John’s Institute-Bacolod despite the subpar performance of star Harold Alarcon.
Mart James Barrera carried the scoring cudgels for Thunderbolts with 25 points to go along with 19 rebounds, five steals, four blocks, and three assists. St. John’s put a defensive clamp on Alarcon, who was held to just 2 points.
Defending champions University of St. La Salle-Bacolod (3-1), meanwhile, scored an 89-84 triumph over STI-West Negros University to force a deadlock in Bracket B.
But STI-WNU still ended up as the top seed in the group heading into the semifinals on Friday due to superior quotient. It will face Bracket A No. 2 St. John’s Institute.
USLS-Bacolod was relegated to second place in Bracket B and will tangle with Bracket A top seed Thunderbolts in a rematch of last year’s finals. The winner of the two semis games will advance to the best-of-three finals starting Feb. 4.
The champion school will represent Bacolod City in the NBTC Regional Tournament on Feb. 23 to 24 in Guimaras Island./PN
