
MANILA – Team Iloilo’s Dhannalyn Mae Demontaño and Jackielyn Estoquia bowed out of contention in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open after suffering two losses in Sands at SM by the Bay in Pasay City.
Demontaño and Estoquia were first defeated by the Paraguayan duo of Michelle Amarilla and Erika Bobadilla 19-21, 13-21 before suffering a 16-21, 12-21 loss to the Germans Klinke Leonie and Lisa-Sophie Kotzan on Friday.
Negrense Bea Tan and Charo Soriano also failed to make it to the next round after losses to Japanese Ayumi Kusano and Takemi Nishibori 10-21, 9-21 and Canadian Megan Nagy and Caleigh Cruickshank 12-21, 15-21.
Still alive in the competition on the distaff side were Cherry Rondina and Angelique Gervacio, which stunned USA’s Lindsey Fuller and Kaley Melville 21-12, 21-16 before bowing to Spanish Paula Soria and Maria Belen Carro 20-22, 21-23.
The pair of Karen Quilario and Lot Catubag also remained in contention after beating Hong Kong’s Yuen Ting Chi and Au Yeung Wai Yan 21-13, 18-21, 15-11. The Philippine pair earlier lost to the Dutch tandem Katja Stam and Julia Wouters 13-21, 11-21.
In the men’s event, Calvin Sarte and Jade Becaldo bowed to Swedish Martin Appelgren and Simon Boman 24-26, 23-21, 13-15 while Ranran Abdilla and Edwin Tolentino lost to Hong Kong’s Kevin Lao Tsz Ho and Wong Pui Lam 18-21, 22-20, 10-15.
Kevin Juban and Raphy Abanto was swept by Austrian tandem of Florian Schnetzer and Daniel Mullner 10-21, 14-21 while Kris Roy Guzman and James Pecana lost to Chinese-Taipei’s Wang Chin-Ju and Hsieh Ya-Jen 20-22, 14-21./PN
